Product Description Mo Willems' award-winning Elephant and Piggie series continues to charm readers. Featuring two lovable and funny characters -- an optimistic (and sometimes reckless) pig and a cautious, pessimistic elephant -- these books make reading irresistible to the beginning readers. Children who sat on their parents' laps to have Pigeon read to them will eagerly take the plunge with these books to start reading on their own. Each book has been vetted by an early learning specialist (and many adorable early learners). In Watch Me Throw the Ball!, Gerald is determined to teach Piggie that ball-throwing is serious business... but Piggie is just as determined to have serious fun.

Too cute February 27, 2010 Martha Stewart (Lexington , NC United States) My son's grandma bought him this book and two other Elephant and Piggie books. I absolutly love these books they are just so cute and sweet. I like them so much I have just ordered all the other books in the series. I just love how the two totally opposite animals are such good friends. Their friendship is inspiring......Oh yeah my son loves them too!
Mo Willems --- doesn't that say enough? October 31, 2009 J. Chapman (pasadena, tx United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love ALL of Mo Willems and, at this point, feel obligated to just buy anything he puts out to join my collection --- we have them all. Yes. I admit.
I think this was probably a 5 in some ways (lesson to be learned) and a 4 in others (perhaps not as whimsical as some Gerald and Piggie) I wanted to give it a 4 1/2 so I compromised. There are 4 five star reviews, 3 four star reviews. Mine makes it an even split :).
We are partial to "Today I will fly?", "I love my New Toy!" and "I am Invited to a Party".
Makes me smile just typing it. Summer of 2008 Watts' "Chester" line "Now it's personal. . ." and Piggie and Gerald's "Party! Party!" have become part of my family's everyday language. Come to think of it, the Mo Willems' Pigeon brought us more than one as well when our girl was younger. :) Anyway. It's Mo. Gotta buy Mo.
Hilarious Good Fun! (and a nice primer to boot :) August 17, 2009 Pam Tee These Elephant and Piggie books are so much fun. In "Watch Me Throw the Ball!" Piggie finds Gerald's ball and is really impressed by how far he can throw it. Gerald lets her join in the fun, but infers that there's a secret to throwing REALLY far. Piggie, of course, insists that the key is to have fun... and that is the message of this cute story.
Piggie takes her shot and my kids -- who are 7 and 9 and who ought to be too old for these books -- thought the results were hysterical. (Okay, I thought it was amusing too. Says something about Mo Willems that he has fans of all ages.)
This one has a message about the value of fun and just-trying, and like all of Mo's work, it's a great read-aloud and primer. (AR folks say it's at the 1st Grade Reading Level)

Halarious book for the 4 - 6 year old set! June 25, 2009 Triplets + one (Cincinnati, OH) A simple story with simple drawings that not only got the attention of my nearly 6 year old but had him rolling in laughter! I read it to my son first, then he took a turn reading to me. A little on the long side for a new reader but a HUGE hit in our house. The others in the series are great too, but this is our personal favorite.
Love this series! June 16, 2009 Ulyyf (NYC) There aren't many easy reader series out there that are as funny as the Elephant and Piggy books. These have very simple illustrations and a lot of very emotional turns of phrase, so hopefully you can start from the beginning keeping kids from developing that awful droning readaloud voice so many children have.
Piggie catches a ball and wants to throw it. NATURALLY, Gerald takes everything too seriously, talking about how long it takes to learn to throw a ball. Piggie throws it... AROUND THE WORLD! (Actually, just behind her.)
And Gerald learns that the important thing is having fun, the obvious moral.
Best moment: Gotta be Piggie's absurd little Super Pig song when she thinks (or pretends) she threw the ball around the world.
