Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
DJs have gone from being underpaid live jukeboxes to becoming premier entertainers, producers, businessmen, and musicians capable of commanding admiration from thousands and earning serious money. Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton's Last Night a DJ Saved My Life was the definitive history of the DJ. Now they gather their mastery of the artistic and technical aspects of being a DJ into a clear, accessible, and entertaining guide. How to DJ is the perfect guide -- from the most basic keys to establishing a music collection and a distinctive sound, to elementary record-spinning, to the complex skills of scratching, hot-mixing, and beat-juggling, as well as the inimitable art of creating an evening of sound that is perfectly timed, balanced, and unforgettable. Diagrams throughout illustrate phrases, beat timing, and song structure with no reliance on music theory, and resource lists recommend everything from which songs are best (and most fun) to learn with, to good sources for building a library of disks, CDs, and MP3s. For those who want to turn pro, the authors give sage advice on the vagaries of the club and music business. Short quotes, anecdotes, and photos of famous DJs such as Grandmaster Flash and Derrick Carter are featured.

My order was received very quickly and the book was in good condition. The price was a steal also. I would definately purchase from this company again.

4 out of 5 stars Must-have guide for beginner DJs   November 2, 2009
P. Cornforth (Burbank)
This book is great for anyone just starting out. I had a ton of questions after I bought my decks and this book was invaluable. It takes it slow and gives you step-by-step lessons, tips to practice, and tons of great advice. If you are confused and frustrated like I was or you just want to brush up on your technique, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book   February 23, 2009
J. Navarro
This book is essential for every modern Dj. I recently purchased it, and have enjoyed every page. It breaks down history, set-up, equipment, beat-matching, while keeping you entertained, engrossed, and inspired. The exercises it outlines are easy, and start to instill good behavior for performing down the road. One last thing just gotta say this book is so good i've had guys been performing for 10-30 years who are awaiting me to finish, just so that they may borrow it.

I'm an inspiring DJ and wanted to learn some basics. This guide knocked it all out for me :D Very detailed, hilarious to read. I'm not much of a book kinda guy, but I couldn't put this one down! 5 stars from me!!

5 out of 5 stars Great!   September 15, 2008
Teodoro M. Ornelas (Chicago, USA)
This is a great book for all level DJs. From the basics of beatmatching to more subjective topics such as how to read a crowd, the authors explain everything with a very direct and enthusiastic language. A great buy!
