Product Description
Tarmon Gai’don, the Last Battle, looms. And mankind is not ready.
The final volume of the Wheel of Time, A Memory of Light, was partially written by Robert Jordan before his untimely passing in 2007. Brandon Sanderson, New York Times bestselling author of the Mistborn books, was chosen by Jordan’s editor---his wife, Harriet McDougal---to complete the final book. The scope and size of the volume was such that it could not be contained in a single book, and so Tor proudly presents The Gathering Storm as the first of three novels that will make up A Memory of Light. This short sequence will complete the struggle against the Shadow, bringing to a close a journey begun almost twenty years ago and marking the conclusion of the Wheel of Time, the preeminent fantasy epic of our era.
In this epic novel, Robert Jordan’s international bestselling series begins its dramatic conclusion. Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, struggles to unite a fractured network of kingdoms and alliances in preparation for the Last Battle. As he attempts to halt the Seanchan encroachment northward---wishing he could form at least a temporary truce with the invaders---his allies watch in terror the shadow that seems to be growing within the heart of the Dragon Reborn himself.
Egwene al’Vere, the Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai, is a captive of the White Tower and subject to the whims of their tyrannical leader. As days tick toward the Seanchan attack she knows is imminent, Egwene works to hold together the disparate factions of Aes Sedai while providing leadership in the face of increasing uncertainty and despair. Her fight will prove the mettle of the Aes Sedai, and her conflict will decide the future of the White Tower---and possibly the world itself.
The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

Wary at first, but ultimately a pleasure November 21, 2009 J. J. Ray (Sydney, Australia) After reading the prologue to The Gathering Storm, I must confess that I was disappointed. Speaking to my friend, with whom I have shared reading the series for the last 15 years, I commented that the writing style was definitely not Jordan and that the characters felt somehow 'wooden' or 'cardboardy', as though they were stereotypes of themselves; I am surprised that Nynaeve is not bald from her excessive braid pulling. But, I plowed ahead anyway because my desire to know what was going to happen to my favourite characters compelled me.
In the end, I could not put this book down and finished reading it in about a week. After a few chapters, I grew used to Sanderson's style (particularly his odd, choppy, one-word sentences) and the characters felt natural again in his hands. He does an admirable job of maintaining the spirit of Jordan's world and characters, while making the writing all his own.
This book ultimately delivers and ties up a number of loose ends while substantially advancing the main story line. I couldn't help but feel like this should have been the book that was written two or three volumes ago. I was very pleased by the focus on Egwene and the wrapping up of the broken White Tower story line - she has been one of my favourite characters, as have most of the story lines involving the Aes Sedai. There is an absolutely brilliant confrontation between her and Elaida which is not to be missed, and there is a later battle scene which literally gave me thrills (a rare experience for me when reading!). I was most thankful that the story line of Perrin and Faile was finally over and done with (though the primary conclusion happened in the last book). As much as I love Jordan's writing, and though I feel somehwat callous saying so, I have to confess that this story line was possibly the greatest waste of paper ever written. I hope that Perrin will once again captivate my attention in the last two books, as he used to in the earlier ones (he was my favourite male character until Faile entered the story). There is good advancement in Rand and Mat's storylines as well, though I did wish Mat's would move along a little faster. I expect there will be some exciting developments for Mat in the next book. Elayne's story line was noticeably absent from this novel, except for cursory comments about her from other characters, but they are enough to give you some idea of what is happening with her.
The Gathering Storm is well worth the purchase and the read for fans of the Wheel of Time series. I am now looking forward more than ever to the two concluding novels.
The Gathering Storm November 20, 2009 Lisa Bowman I was a little apprehensive about how this book was going to turn out. Would I be able to tell a difference? Would Brandon's style of writing not be to my liking? I shouldn't have worried. The transition was so smooth that I couldn't tell which parts were Robert Jordan's and which were Brandon Sanderson's. I am extremely happy with this book. I can't wait to see what's in store for the next book.
wasn't what i expected November 19, 2009 Feefe Lacrue (Utah) I wouldn't allow myself to expect robert jordan's mastery from a new author. Nor when u pick up this book should you. When I read the forward by sanderson saying he wouldn't even try to imitate jordan, I began to verbally abuse my book. Upon reading the book I understand his reasoning... He's not dumb enough to believe he could. That being said, I was very impressed by his streamlining of this book. Things got done. The character's personality's changed. All non-important character's have no mention, or where jordan would have thrown in a chapter from their pov, sanderson simply mention what the main character has to say about. It feels that many of the plots that were getting irritating in the previous books were completely tossed for more important things. It's been said in the previous 10 books, but I finally BELIEVE the last battle is coming and someone's doing something about it. It was a very fast read, and I did miss Jordan's style at some of the most important parts. There are areas where Jordan obviously wrote it himself. It was good, which is not what I expected.
Seamless Continuance of the Storyline November 19, 2009 J. Macdaniel (East Coast, FL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read all 11 novels written solely by Robert Jordan to refresh my memory of the story before continuing on to this novel. It flowed into the other 11 seamlessly. There are style differences between Jordan and Sanderson, but it requires looking for them to pick up. Enjoy the story, and I feel it holds true to Jordan's vision. There is plenty happening and plenty of action, with some surprises thrown in. I look forward to reading the next two books as Sanderson finishes The Wheel of Time.
Faster Pace.... Brilliant! November 19, 2009 J. Cheek I believe Brandon Sanderson did a GREAT job in taking Robert Jordan's thoughts and ideas and turning into an even faster pace novel than what we have seen in the past. I know that orginially this book was suppose to be wrapped up in this one book but I disagree with all of the critisism that says that was possible. There were far to many loose ends that Sanderson is doing a great job of wrangling in! Thanks Brandon for continuing this great piece of work!
