| Customer Reviews:
Defying genre classification and setting a high bar May 1, 2008 Paul Manousos' latest album is no radical departure from his earliest efforts, but displays a maturity which is both musical and human. Sometimes the word 'mature' evokes a lack of spirit or punch, that is not the way I am using it. As others have said in reviews, he is capable of belting out his lyrics with an ungodly amount of fervor while hitting each note (and a wide range it is) near perfectly. It isn't easy to classify his music (thus the title of my review) because it seems Paul Manousos could care less what genre he may fall into. At times bluesy, other times working the rich tradition of straight-forward American rock n' roll, but still leaving room for the occasional ballad which is held together by great musicianship and rich lyrics (obviously, I'm not a ballad fan in general). The band is exceptionally tight- the rhythm section is strong enough to set your watch by. The lead guitarist has amazing chops but prefers to let his wonderful tone and at times countryish style speak for itself.
Which brings me to the band and the sound. I have to admit I am a freakish audiophile type, and even with my high standards it sounds absolutely wonderful. It isn't compressed to the end of the universe as so much new music is, each instrument is bathed in space, allowing its timbre to come to life. When a recording actually has some headroom, you can hear things like transients and harmonic modulation - pretty rare nowadays. This is geek talk, but if you are someone who is a bit obsessed with the SOUND itself, this album won't let you down.
So, if this review sounds like hyperbole, I apologize. I've been listening to it since it came out and have seen Paul Manousos live (don't let that slip by you - you are REALLY missing out if you do, the man is a troubador). So yes, I love this record. It is astonishing to me that music this good doesn't rise to the top. Instead our best sellers generally provoke one big yawn (there are exceptions of course.. Radiohead, Wilco, White Stripes to name a few). If you like what you hear on the clips, BUY IT - you won't be disappointed. And don't try and pin it down, it'll slip right away.
