Tom's of Maine is far superior to any foam or gel out of a can. I have pretty sensitive skin, and I find that most shaving foams/gels really dry it out. I don't have that problem with Tom's at all. It moisturizes, and it has a pleasant, mild mint scent. The directions on the box suggest applying the cream by hand, but I recommend using a brush and mug, which creates a nice lather.
I was thinking about buying the Italian stuff, but I thought $10.00 a tube was a little too pricey. The four pack for $15.00 also attracted me to Tom's. HOWEVER, when I received my order, I found only one tube in the box. Amazon made a shipping error, which it quickly rectified. Shortly after I emailed customer service, Amazon sent me the pack of four which I had ordered. The quick response to my complaint was greatly appreciated.
